What is Mehter? Turkey has a musical tradition within its army for more than 1200 years. The first historical documents mentioning about a Turkish military band are written in Old Turkish scrypt in Orkhun Valley dated back to 8th C AD. The band that performes this military music is named “Mehteran” and the music that is perfomed is called “Mehter Music” Historical founder of “Mehteran” is Osman Gazi – The founder of The Ottoman Empire. When Osman Gazi received “The Independence Warrant” from the Seljuks, he was given a Tug – a pole with circularly arranged horse tail hairs at the top and a drum, instruments used in the band, both representing sovereignty. Since its foundation Mehteran was always in the front line with the Ottoman Army, and was giving morale in the battlefields. Thus, Mehteran represents the Ottoman Army and its victories.
