The 290,600-square-foot (27,000-square-meter) museum features 42 rooms that house a vast collection of industrial artifacts and vehicles, including a rotary phone, a Kalender steam ferry, and a World War II-era submarine. Visitors can participate in hands-on activities and demonstrations highlighting the machinery and technology that powered Turkey’s industrial revolution. Most excursions that visit the Rahmi M. Koç Museum will include admission and a guided tour of the exhibits.
Things to know before you go
- In the summer, you can hop on the museum’s 1936 steam tug and ride a narrow-gauge railway.
- Photography is allowed inside the museum, but flash photography is prohibited in some areas.
- There is a café on-site where museum guests can grab a bite to eat.
How to get there
The museum is located in the Hasköy district of Istanbul, on the northern shore of the Golden Horn, and is accessible by public bus and taxi. The most scenic way to visit the museum is by taking the Golden Horn (Haliç) ferry line from Karaköy Pier to Haskoy Seaport.
When to get there
As some of the museum’s collection is outdoors, the best time to visit the Rahmi M. Koç Museum would be during the spring (April and May) or fall (September and November) when the weather is mild and pleasant. It is also advisable to visit during the weekdays to avoid crowds. The Rahmi M. Koç Museum is closed on Mondays, so plan your visit accordingly.
Where to find the best view in Istanbul
The Rahmi M. Koç Museum is a quick ferry or bus ride away from Pierre Loti Hill. The famous viewpoint, named after the French writer, offers a panoramic view of the Golden Horn and Istanbul. The hill can be reached by cable car from Eyüp district or by climbing the steep hillside. Once there, visitors can enjoy a cup of tea or coffee at the café.
