This was the private residence of the Ottoman Sultans from the 16th to the 19th centuries and it houses some excellent exhibits which include sacred Islamic Relics of the Prophet Mohammed, an Imperial Treasury, priceless Chinese porcelain, weapons & calligraphy.

(photo stop) The fountain is located in front of the Imperial Gate of the great Topkapi Palace on a site of an older Byzantine fountain called Perayton. It was built in 1728 by Sultan Ahmed III.

The Sultan Ahmet Mosque is known as the Blue Mosque because of its’ 20,000 blue Iznik ceramic tiles. Built for Sultan Ahmet I by the architect Mehmet, it is distinctive for having 6 towering minarets.

This was the sporting and social centre of ancient Constantinople for 1,000 years and the remaining monuments include the German Fountain of Wilhelm II, a bronze Serpentine Column, the Obelisk of Theodosius and Column of Constantine.

(Photo Stop) ‘Hagia Irene’ means Holy Peacein Greek and this church was first built as a basilica with three naves on the order of Constantinos the Great (306–337), on the site of a temple. The atrium is the only surviving piece from the Byzantine period.

The Church of Holy Wisdom or Hagia Sophia was constructed in the 6th century AD on the orders of Emperor Justinian and was out-standing in size and structure particularly with its’ massive dome. After the conquest of Constantinople in the 15th century, the church became an Ottoman Imperial mosque for many more hundreds of years until it was finally made a museum in the 20th century. This building is probably the most iconic of all in Istanbul.
