Stop At: Kaymakli Underground City, Derinkuyu Turkey

Kaymakli Underground City was carved out by the Hittites nearly 3,500 years ago and it was used by early Christian tribes as a main shelter to protect themselves from invading armies coming in from the East. Marvel at the tunnels, storage rooms, ventilation shafts, remains of a church and much more.

Stop At: Soganli Valley, 40Km Southeast of Urgup, and 25Km to the East of Derinkuyu, Kayseri 38800 Turkey

This deep valley formed by earthquakes and erosion over thousands of years, has created a beautiful landscape through which to walk. The valley, which was divided into two, has been occupied since the Roman period when they used the conical rock formations as graves, and later, the Byzantines transformed them into churches with colourful frescoes painted on their walls. During our walk we will visit the Dark Church, Serpent Church and the Church of St. Barbara.

Stop At: Sobesos Ancient City, 1 mile from Sahinefendi, Urgup Turkey

Discovered in 2002, this city still has much to be excavated however, the mosaics alone are worth seeing and there are also chapels, graves, the Agora, Bouleuterion and a Roman bath belonging to the Roman period.

Stop At: Keslik Monastery, Urgup Turkey

This large complex was a rock-cut monastery dating from the Byzantine era where up to 200 monks lived. It’s possible to see the refectory, sleeping quarters and three churches as well as the beautiful religious frescoes painted on the walls.

Stop At: Mustafapasa, Mustafapasa, Urgup, Cappadocia

Originally known as Sinasos, this small town was inhabited by Greek Orthodox families until the beginning of the 20th century and evidence of their architecture can be seen in the old Greek houses around the town and at St Nicholas Church which sits in the town square.
