The first known information about the Marmaris Castle built in B.C. 490-425, on the peninsula overlooking the sea was told by Herodotus from Halicarnassus (Bodrum). Herodotus tells that the castle was built in 3,000 BC. Evliya Çelebi, the traveler of the 17th century, mentioned in his famous Travel Book that the fortress was built in 1522 during the Rhodes expedition by the command of Süleyman the Magnificent and this place was used as a military base. He also mentions the 40-foot-long square cut stone blocks on the foundation, dating back to the ancient period. These blocks are still visible and they are the remains of 2000 year-old castle belonging to the Hellenistic period. The building inscription of today’s castle, which was built during the Ottoman period, is still in its place.
