Güvercinada Fortress, located in the Hacıfeyzullah District of Kuşadası City, was built on the mouth of the harbour to protect it. There is an inner fortress (built by Barbaros Hayrettin Pasha) and fortress walls (built by İlyas Aga) on the island. These walls were built to protect against the expected attacks from the Greek islanders and from the sea during the Mora Revolt period. The stones used in construction of the fortress were transported from Yılancı Cape. The architecture of the castle is pentagonal. There is an inscription at the entrance of the castle. The island was also known as the Pirate Castle because it served as a police station against pirates during the Ottoman period. The tower, located at the highest point of the island, was used by guards on watch.
Kuşadası icon Güvercinada is registered as a “monumental work” and is also one of the most important cultural and historical values of Kuşadası. The area within the castle is a 1st degree Archaeological Site.
This structure was built close to Kuşadası Pier in 1618 and its construction was ordered by grand vizier Öküz Mehmet Pasha. The rectangular courtyard is surrounded by thick and high walls and there are two floored and porched indoor spaces. It was built using rubble stones and reused stone materials. The caravanserai, which has the appearance of a small inner castle, has a triangular tipped dentil at the top. There are rooms lined up all around the spacious courtyards. It has been restored in various periods and is preserved in its original form. There are two sets of stairs leading to the back of the structure from its northwest and southeast corner sections. The entrance to the caravanserai is to the north of the building and the marble door cavity is arched.
Gazibegendi Park is a place where you can see all Kusadasi town from a hill. It is a beautiful spot to take pictures and have a nice, very reasonably priced, meal in the café owned by the Kusadasi Municipality with an amazing view.
When you arrive to the park, the first thing you see is the statue of Ataturk, sitting and looking at the view. It is very impressive.
One of the best moments of the day to see the view from the hill at sunset. So many travelers are going there at sunset to take pictures and enjoy the wonderful scenery.
The beautiful hand of peace sculpture with doves on the waterfront promenade.
The whole procedure to make raw leather into usable material is called tanning and is carried out by tanning masters.
Tanning is the process applied to raw leather before the leather dries and deteriorates.
The processed leather is primarily used for clothing items and many other forms of products also.
However, the tanning profession, which held major importance in Kuşadası’s cultural, social and economic life in the past was defeated by the developing technology in the early 2000’s. However, this tannery, where no machinery or chemicals were used, was still active between 1937 and 1968.
The 16 stone structures in the tannery where the tanning procedures were carried out has been restored and is used as Tannery Museum where the hand tools used by the tanning masters can be seen on display today.
This exhibition centre offers a unique opportunity to see the materials that were used for natural tanning.
The Grand Bazaar consisted of arcades of regular type shops many of which specialised in leather-goods, carpets, shoes, giftware, jewellery and watches.
